Find hardy roses where the surviving roots enable plants to rejuvenate as the same plant variety, rather than the rootstock variety, after a hard freeze. New roses offer easier planting due to more pliable roots that need smaller holes and suffer less transplant shock. Roses like a good, deep soak to promote deep rooting and they will actually develop drought tolerance if established this way. The Jackson and Perkins research center is just outside Somis California near the coast. Jackson & Perkins began selling roses before the turn of the century, and they are now the company's main garden product.
